The Yellow River Delta stands out among the other well-known river deltas in the world. A unique ecosystem called an “estuarine wetland” exists here where freshwater and saltwater meet, providing plenty of planktonic organisms for birds. The Yellow River Delta covers two of the eight primary bird migration routes in the world. Every year, 6 million birds migrate, spend the winter, and reproduce. The Yellow River Delta is the largest breeding area for the endangered oriental stork, the second largest breeding area for Saunder’s gulls.
